Equine Therapy at Uinta Academy
Uinta's equine program is the most purposeful and comprehensive equine program in residential treatment. There is a reason that horses are such great partners in helping individuals through personal struggles. Horses are herd animals with social order, much like humans. They seek companionship and must find their place in the herd's social structure. When a teen spends time with a horse, they must assess and figure out her relationship with their horse while the horse figures out the relationship as well. How a teen manages this process often mirrors their relationships with other people.

I cannot thank the staff at Uinta enough for the care and love that they showed to my daughter. She was 12 when she arrived at Uinta and was there for 21 months. They were open and honest with us at every step of her journey and I have immense trust for their team. The staff treated her like family and helped us to become a family again. Their attention to her unique needs, age, and educational challenges have helped give her the skills that she needed and understand and embrace her gifts. After years of struggle, we determined that residential treatment was the best option for our daughter. As hard as this decision was to make, it is one that I do not regret. We are blessed that Uinta exists as it gave us time to focus on our entire family's need for help while getting her the immersive care she needed. She graduated from the program and has now been home for 2 years. She is succeeding academically and socially while continuing her follow-up therapy here. Shortly after her one year anniversary, she asked for a trip back to Uinta to see the staff and horses for her birthday. This was such a heartwarming reunion with her therapist and staff but most importantly her horse Tyson.
